Although the mansion is not open to the public, interested visitors do ask about its history. Built in 1876, the architects being Paley and Austin, the records and original plans were burnt in an office fire, we believe. The house was built by Capt Charles John Myers for his bride, Clara Belasyse Myers, nee Manson. She was the sister of Ethel Gordon Fenwick who was a pioneer of nursing standards, the youngest Matron of St Barts (aged twentyfour), journal writer and editor and ambassador of nursing for this country in America and Europe.
Several farms were sold by the landowner to build Dunningwell. He died in 1910 and was survived by his widow for a further few decades. Upon her demise, a nephew then sold the property to an artist named Orlando Greenwood and his music teacher wife who was a concert pianist. They lived at this address until 1966 when it was bought by the present family. Ghostly apparitions of cats and dogs on the main staircase have been reported and some other sightings have also been noted.
Because of the Greenwood connection, a small art gallery with examples of his work has been opened offering an opportunity for local artists and sculptors to display their talents. These include Julie Wills, ceramics John Hewitt, 3D acrylics. Orders may be placed for Limited Edition prints by the late Orlando Greenwood. Cubist Interpretations by John Strike (commissions only)."
